Gulp Gulp, Ribbit!

Another froggy game! We played this one in May when we had a good handle on subtraction and we were practicing our skills! With all of these games  it is so important to teach the concept first (we usually played a similar game on the smartboard, then I modeled correct playing behavior and finally they were able to play.

 

 How to play: Each student will need one mat (with the frog and lily pad), one cup of black beans (These are the flies- I use a Dixie cup for distributing small manipulatives. They will only need about 10 beans.) Each table will need one set of subtraction cards.

Students pick a card, read the sentence and then use the mat to subtract. So, if I got 5-2, I put 5 black flies on the lily pad and then the frog eats two flies. So I drag two over to the frog. I count how many I have left and write my sentence.

 

If you don’t want to use black beans you can use these sweet plastic flies! I have a set, but I can’t find them!

Frog Hopping

Frog Hopping!

This was a fun game we played in May during our frog week. Students would jump their frog onto a lily pad, write the number, jump their frog again and write the number and finally solve the addition sentence. I made the lily pad pond by gluing on lily pad die cuts (dollar store find) to large blue construction paper and cutting it out in a wavy pattern. If you can’t find them at the dollar store- you can simply cut out a rounded heart shape from green paper to make your own lily pads.  I wrote numbers 1 to 5 on the pond. We were working on addition to 10 at the end of the year!

 

 You can buy these fun little jumping frogs at Walmart or Amazon. All you need to do to make them jump is push down on the back and release! Here are some that are similar to the ones that I bought.

Building Sentences

This is an activity that I did each week with my kiddos. It is such a simple activity and was relatively low prep. I switched out the graphics to match our weekly theme and made up some sentences that they would be able to sound out! We had fun learning to stretch words, build sentences, and write correct sentences.  I paired my kiddos up because I found having them work together produced better results. My “higher” students were able to help my “lower” students and they weren’t able to move on until both students had it. Before they were allowed to write the sentence, they had to put the cards in order and raise their hand for me to check. Once THEY READ the sentence CORRECTLY they were able to write it. If they had a few words out of place, they had to try again. If they were unsuccessful repeatedly I would show them the words that were mixed up.  We worked on writing with finger spaces, remembering out capital letters and the ending punctuation! I used this activity in May with my kinder kids!

After our teacher gives us the go ahead- we write in our best writing with finger spaces. (It’s okay if we take up more than one line, but we are learning to write smaller!

Here is a little tip for keeping those cards organized- each set gets a number on the back and then number the baggie it goes in! Another space saver is to cut the bottom corner of the bag very slightly to allow the air to be pressed out! Here is a picture of some of my numbering! It can be tedious and time consuming- but it is a huge time saver when you find a piece that didn't make it back into the baggie! Instead of searching through all the sets, you know exactly where it goes!
