Space!

Space is one of my favorite theme weeks. Our space unit fell during the 5th week of school so most of these games are fairly simple since we were still learning how to play with others and learn the rules of Kindergarten!

We had been working on our color words, so my first game is a simple, roll and color game!

Alien Colors:   <---- click here to get your free copy. leave me a comment if you download.....pretty please!

How to play: Each student gets a paper. Students share a color key and dice. Students roll the dice, look at the key and color the alien to match. Very simple game, this one was great for students who may have finished another game earlier and needed a quick game while waiting for classmates.

Build A Rocketship:   <---- click here to get your free copy- leave me a comment please!

My kiddos LOVED this game!!! : ) It was so simple and we were able to play over and over!

How to play: Play this game in partners. (I don’t like to have more than 3 kids in a group.) Each student gets a rocket launch pad. They need one set of sight word cards with breakdown cards. Students pick a card, if they can read the card they put a unifix cube on the launch pad. If they can’t read the word, they ask their partner and put the card back. If they get a breakdown card they take a piece off their rocket ship. (They are just stacking unifix cubes vertically- it doesn’t really look like a rocket ship, but they looooovvveee it.)

Building Sentences-Dragonfly

My first blog was about froggy building sentences, an activity we did each week. I’m adding another one of the other weeks right now. I sure hope you like them!

If you didn’t see the first post, here is how we practiced these sentences.

Partner up students. Each pair gets a bag, they scramble up the cards, put them in order and read. They raise their hand to read it to me. Each student must be able to read it or they have to try it again. Once they have read it correctly they write it on their recording sheet. I remind them to write small, use finger spaces and remembering that pesky period. After they have it written they get a new baggie. Now, this activity usually only lasted us about 15 to 20 minutes. Some kiddos may get one sentence done and others may fill their page! That’s okay! Each kiddo works at their own pace. I want quality over quantity.

I’ll keep adding more so check back. : )

Here is a prep tip- print it in black and white so you don’t waste your precious colored ink and run it on colored construction paper. The construction paper is sturdier and holds up nicely when laminated.

This is how I kept my sentences organized. Each kiddo brought gallon Ziploc bags, snack bags, sandwich and quart bags as part of their school supply list and boy did we use them!

Gulp Gulp, Ribbit!

Another froggy game! We played this one in May when we had a good handle on subtraction and we were practicing our skills! With all of these games  it is so important to teach the concept first (we usually played a similar game on the smartboard, then I modeled correct playing behavior and finally they were able to play.

How to play: Each student will need one mat (with the frog and lily pad), one cup of black beans (These are the flies- I use a Dixie cup for distributing small manipulatives. They will only need about 10 beans.) Each table will need one set of subtraction cards.

Students pick a card, read the sentence and then use the mat to subtract. So, if I got 5-2, I put 5 black flies on the lily pad and then the frog eats two flies. So I drag two over to the frog. I count how many I have left and write my sentence.

If you don’t want to use black beans you can use these sweet plastic flies! I have a set, but I can’t find them!

Frog Hopping

Frog Hopping!

This was a fun game we played in May during our frog week. Students would jump their frog onto a lily pad, write the number, jump their frog again and write the number and finally solve the addition sentence. I made the lily pad pond by gluing on lily pad die cuts (dollar store find) to large blue construction paper and cutting it out in a wavy pattern. If you can’t find them at the dollar store- you can simply cut out a rounded heart shape from green paper to make your own lily pads.  I wrote numbers 1 to 5 on the pond. We were working on addition to 10 at the end of the year!

You can buy these fun little jumping frogs at Walmart or Amazon. All you need to do to make them jump is push down on the back and release! Here are some that are similar to the ones that I bought.

Race and Build

This game is called “Race and Build!” It’s a very simple and repetitive game, but my kiddos always loved this game. Our transportation week was during the time when we had just started our numbers. This game works on recognition of numbers 3 to 5, but you could easily practice with larger numbers.

How to play:
Each kid needs a race and build mat and one race car set. They will share the cards because it is a partner game! Students take turns picking a card and reading the number. If they can correctly identify the number they may move their car up on the corresponding column. If they get a flat tire, they move back one space.  Whenever their car makes it to the top of their grid they add a piece to their race car and that car starts over at the bottom again. The race cars are a sticker sheet. All they have to do is peel and stick the decals onto their cars!

Here are the race car sticker sheets that I bought.
Here is a copy of the game if you are interested. I included a blank version if you want to program the game for a different set of numbers. Please remember to comment/rate my project if you download.

Transportation Sight Word Practice

Sight Word Practice

This game was created to practice two sight words (our sight words of the week). One of my fabulous teacher friends (Shout out- Tarren!) went to a conference where they spoke about repetition with sight words. (Duh, right. Kiddos need lots of repetition and practice!) After that we starting making more games with just a few sight words to give our kids extra practice with our sight words of the week. I loved that they had to say the words over and over! The kids enjoyed these simple games to because they weren’t overwhelmed by many sight words, especially my kids who struggled with sight words. This isn’t to say we didn’t play games with all of sight words because we did. This game was part of my transportation unit. Our words that we were practicing were see and in, but you could use any two words that you are working on. I am including a blank copy and a copy with the words already typed in.  We used matchbox cars to play this game, but I found it was easier to play with these little foam cars because they didn’t roll on the lamination!

How To Play: Each kiddo gets one race track. Each pair gets two trophies. Each kiddo will need two cars! Students pick a card, read the card and move their car accordingly. If they don’t know the word, they ask their partner and put the card back, but don’t move their car. If they get a pitstop card- they move their car back one spot! Whoever makes it to the top of their race track first wins a trophy!

These trophies can be found in the Walmart party aisle, but I’m an amazon lover! Amazon Prime= free shipping! Here are the ones I bought!

Building Sentences

Building Sentences

This is an activity that I did each week with my kiddos. It is such a simple activity and was relatively low prep. I switched out the graphics to match our weekly theme and made up some sentences that they would be able to sound out! We had fun learning to stretch words, build sentences, and write correct sentences.  I paired my kiddos up because I found having them work together produced better results. My “higher” students were able to help my “lower” students and they weren’t able to move on until both students had it. Before they were allowed to write the sentence, they had to put the cards in order and raise their hand for me to check. Once THEY READ the sentence CORRECTLY they were able to write it. If they had a few words out of place, they had to try again. If they were unsuccessful repeatedly I would show them the words that were mixed up.  We worked on writing with finger spaces, remembering out capital letters and the ending punctuation! I used this activity in May with my kinder kids!

We start with our cards all mixed up!

We put them in order, hug our words and read!

After our teacher gives us the go ahead- we write in our best writing with finger spaces. (It’s okay if we take up more than one line, but we are learning to write smaller!

Here is our froggy sentence building activity! Please, please if you download the activity leave me a comment. The encouragement will further motivate me!

Here is a little tip for keeping those cards organized- each set gets a number on the back and then number the baggie it goes in! Another space saver is to cut the bottom corner of the bag very slightly to allow the air to be pressed out! Here is a picture of some of my numbering! It can be tedious and time consuming- but it is a huge time saver when you find a piece that didn't make it back into the baggie! Instead of searching through all the sets, you know exactly where it goes!

Enjoy!

If you made it to the bottom of the post- thank you! The first person to comment with your mailing address and  follow my blog will be given the chance to get this product. I will mail you my set since I won't be needing it! It's all ready for you to use. : )
